HOPE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
A Progressive Christian Worshipping Community
Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost – October 18, 2020
PRELUDE
WELCOME and GREETING
INTROIT
CALL TO WORSHIP One: God who is beyond all time and space, we find ourselves displaced in time and space, not an hour together on Sunday morning, but in homes and offices and RVs, in the morning, afternoon, evening.
All: Send your Spirit among us, a comfort and a reminder of all that we share, now and then, here and there, always beyond. Amen.
HYMN #322 O God, Whose First Creative Word
O God, whose first creative word
set universes into place,
who stretched across the whirling void
infinities of our time and space:
O speak to our chaotic day
a word of ordered grace, we pray.
O Christ who came, the living word,
proclaiming love’s redeeming power,
who drained the tempter’s bitter cup
and triumphed in earth’s darkest hour;
O speak to our despair and pain
a word that kindles hope again.
O Spirit, ever-present word,
God’s agent of transforming grace,
who seeks to enter every heart
with light its darkness to replace;
O speak within the hearts we raise
a joyful word of faith and praise.+

HYMN #608 Dear God, Who Loves All Humankind (vv. 1 & 4)
Dear God, who loves all humankind,
forgive our foolish ways;
reclothe us in our rightful mind;
in purer lives thy service find,
in deeper reverence, praise.
Drop they still dews of quietness
till all our strivings cease;
take from our souls the strain and stress,
and let our ordered lives confess
the beauty of thy peace.+

JOYS AND CONCERNS/PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
